Mongrel is a role-playing game, designed by Ron Edwards of Adept Press, set in the distant future where humankind has travelled into deep space, destroyed the earth, openned extra-planar gates to Hell, and broken into fractious groups of mongrels--genetically altered humans who are as much demon or beast as man. In sketching these concepts, I took most of my cues from Ron's text, using his descriptions of sample characters, skills, and settings as the basis for my ideas. I tried to give everything certain hellish properties, especially the archetecture and the look of the characters' eyes. I also wanted to do my best to represent the grand scope of the game world, which consists of a solar system containing three inhabitable planets housing vast technologically advanced civilizations. I hadn't done any serious science fiction illustrations in a couple of years, so I had a lot of fun doing these sketches. I used gouahce and ink for the finished illustrations which created a kind of archival photograph look to the pieces. Ron pared down to five potential finshed pieces from the eight sketches I presented to him, which, in the end, really didn't help much, since the five he picked would have all been fun to finish. I decided to go with the Cityscape, because it features Ahvia, a sample character from the game's text, and because I think a sprawling cityscape is a good thing to have in a science fiction setting. The second sketch I chose was Hellgate v2 because Hellgates are a central part of the game world's history. This was a particularly difficult illustration for me because I never really had a solid picture of the finished product in my head. On the opposite side of the coin was the final piece: that of another sample character, Ghiazza, being pounced upon by a Demon/Man. I chose this one because it was the only sketch with any action in it, and because Ron's wife liked it. This piece was easy and fun, and I'm very pleased with how it turned out. I'm not sure when these pieces will see print, but when they do, I'll be sure to post an announcement. |
