BONES Final Illustrations & Cover Concept Sketches (2004)

BONES is a fantasy role-playing game created by Andy Martone. The game's central mechanic is based on customizable dice--six-siders with icons representing a given character's various skills and abilities instead of numbers. To complete a task successfully, such as opening a lock with a difficulty of 3, a player need only roll enough "thief" icons (in this case 3 or more) using his character's dice. If you'd like to learn more about BONES, see Andy's thread in the Indie Role-Playing Games Forum at The Forge.

Andy hired me to illustrate the cover for him as well as the logo, the game icons, and some interior pieces. Above are both the finished pieces and cover concept sketches. The final cover piece was done with gouache based on Concept #3. The cover was based on a desription from Andy of a female elf warrior holding the severed head of a Troll. I decided that I would rather see the elf and the troll fighting, thus were born the variants, but, in the end, we went back to the severed head.

The interior pieces were done soley in pencil and were derived from game play examples taken from the text. I feel that they're some of my best pencil illustrations to date. I particularly like the illustrations of the elf necromancer desecrating a graveyard and the family of inbred cannibals, which simultaneously contains both the largest woman and thinnest man I've ever illustrated. That piece also helped me determine that the next time someone asks me to draw a pile of skulls, the price of the piece will double.
